Maxima of Branching Random Walks

In recent years several authors have obtained limit theorems for Ln, the location of the rightmost particle in a supercritical branching random walk but all of these results have been proved under the assumption that the offspring distribution has (p(O)=.fexp(Ox)dF(x)0. In this paper we investigate what happens when there is a slowly varying function K so that 1-F(x)~x-qK(x) as x...

Ladder Heights , Gaussian Random Walks , and the Riemann Zeta Function

Yale University and University of California, Berkeley Let Sn n ≥ 0 be a random walk having normally distributed increments with mean θ and variance 1, and let τ be the time at which the random walk first takes a positive value, so that Sτ is the first ladder height. Then the expected value EθSτ, originally defined for positive θ, may be extended to be an analytic function of the complex variab...

A Note on Maxima in Random Walks

We give a combinatorial proof that a random walk attains a unique maximum with probability at least 1/2. For closed random walks with uniform step size, we recover Dwass’s count of the number of length ` walks attaining the maximum exactly k times. We also show that the probability that there is both a unique maximum and a unique minimum is asymptotically equal to 1 4 and that the probability t...

q-Riemann zeta function

We consider the modified q-analogue of Riemann zeta function which is defined by ζq(s)= ∑∞ n=1(qn(s−1)/[n]s), 0< q < 1, s ∈ C. In this paper, we give q-Bernoulli numbers which can be viewed as interpolation of the above q-analogue of Riemann zeta function at negative integers in the same way that Riemann zeta function interpolates Bernoulli numbers at negative integers. Also, we will treat some...

Branching Random Walks

We study a generalized branching random walk where particles breed at a rate which depends on the number of neighbouring particles. Under general assumptions on the breeding rates we prove the existence of a phase where the population survives without exploding. We construct a non trivial invariant measure for this case.
